Yesterday I managed to piss off an employee good and proper. Perhaps I should have been more tactful than saying “I have no control over what you do outside of work, and I can’t stop you from doing something stupid and selfish. I f you do go to Florida for spring break you will need to self quarantine at home for two weeks before coming back to work.”
According to him this is nothing to worry about and it’s way blown out of proportion. I’m a complete dumbass and totally overreacting. In related news, I’m a total asshole for ruining his spring break plans. Good thing I’m used to being an asshole.
For those interested in trying to visualize how fast this is spreading, the WHO has a neat dashboard that you can use to see the number of cases reported worldwide and by country. What really helps to visualize this is looking at the cumulative cases graph, especially by country.
https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/685d0ace521648f8a5beeeee1b9125cd
Cumulative cases in China
Cumulative cases in Italy
Cumulative cases in the United States
Fortunately for China it looks like they are turning the corner. As long as they can keep transmission slowed down they should be through the worst of it. Unfortunately for Italy and the U.S. and a lot of other countries it is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
For the record I don’t think it’s time to panic. It is time to be smart about things. Minimize your contact with others, especially those over 60 . Even if your state hasn’t closed their restaurants and other public gathering places, avoid them. Get carry out, get delivery, but don’t eat in the restaurant. You don’t need to buy two carts full of toilet paper. Have enough supplies on hand so that you don’t need to go to the store every day. Keep your shopping minimized as much as possible, and do it at times when the store isn’t crowded. D on’t do unnecessary shopping. Now isn’t the time to go to the mega mall even if they do have killer deals on those cute shoes you’ve been looking at.

I have an item I need to return to a friend, and I texted him to say that I’d be out on my bike and that I’d bring it by his house. He texted back to say he wasn’t home, along with a picture of the view from his hotel room in Panama City, FL. So I replied that I’ll wait until he gets home, and then I’ll wait two weeks until he’s done with his self quarantine.

I dont understand the getting carry out you are still trusting other people to make your food, who’s to say that they are being safe about it? While i do want to still support local businesses i think the safe thing to do right now is make your own food.

We had a meeting at work saying that if you just cameback from another country you must self quarantine with full pay. But if after march 13th, you must self quarantine without pay.

You could just drop it at his door when he comes back... Completely contactless.

but I really want those cute shoes...
You are exactly right. My wife is dealing with less than understanding staff right now - Lots of folks out in the field not taking precautions and a bunch of staff that want to get paid to stay home with their kids, (and not work.) “But Sean Hannity said the whole thing is snowflake BS...”

Well they are in theory following all sorts of health codes specifically for the purpose of preventing diseases (though not covid-19 specifically) to be spread in food preparation. This should be good enough, if those rules are being followed.
I feel safe getting takeout, though I’ll admit I’d feel a lot safer if takeout places were known for offering paid sick leave.

and when he does come down with it, he’ll act like it’s a big surprise and how could anyone have seen it coming, and why don’t you feel sorry for him?

You’re right. Fuck him and everybody else going to the beach right now. I saw some news report where they interviewed people in Panama City on the beach. One dude was like, “we’re out here on the same, spread out from each other, so we should be safe.” I wanted to yell at the TV, it’s not the beach you idiot, it’s the hotels, bars and restaurants you frequent in an overcrowded beach town.

I think take out food is probably safer than grocery shopping right now, given how packed the stores are.

These places are going to be so busy with orders i guarantee you that these guidelines are going to be over looked. I will make my own food and i recommend others do the same.

Haven’t you heard? Fox News now says that this is a huge crisis, and Trump is a tremendous hero for helping us all through it. Trump of course now claims to be an extraordinary visionary who realized from the start this would be a terrible pandemic (he doesn’t explain how this meshes with doing nothing other than shutting the borders with China for months, or why he was talking about potentially being down to zero cases just a few weeks ago, and down- playing things as recently as Sunday ).

Decisions have consequences. That’s called life. I can’t imagine why you would take reasonable actions in the face of exponential growth of confirmed cases of a virus.

I had to cancel two bachelor parties next month (one was mine, another was one I was planning/organizing). Not sure what he/she thinks they’re going to do down in Florida. Bars and restaurants are closed for takeout, beaches are shutting down. If they really want that warm weather, just crank the heat in your house.

He gave me the key code to his front door. I should toss it inside now before he gets back and touches the pad himself.

How can you guarantee that a restaurant over by my house isn’t following the rules?

I walk thru people’s homes on a daily basis. Right now I’m asking if anyone is ill. I sanitize my hands when I’m done. I expect Fannie Mae to issue directives that all appraisals be exterior only in the next few days.

I think the general idea is that going to the grocery store exposes you to dozens of random people practicing varying levels of hygiene . Compare that to a small team of chefs in a controlled environment, maintaining consistent hygienic standards, and cooking your food to temperatures high enough to kill any viruses.

I promise you the “Mega Mall” is closed. Every shopping mall is closed along with every public library, bar/ restaurant, school, and on down the line. MN jumped to wedge a foot in the door to keep it from opening and is near the point of slamming it shut and throwing the bolt.
Also your name is quite fitting here. Same goes for all the rest of the Nordahoovian’s.
